Transition
At Fountains Primary School, we understand that transitions can be both an exciting and worrying time for children, parents and carers. Whether your child is joining us for the very first time, moving between curriculum pathways, or preparing for a new stage in their educational journey, change can bring a mixture of emotions and uncertainties.
We know that every child is unique and that successful transitions take careful planning, communication and support. Our aim is to ensure that all children feel safe, confident and ready for their next step. We work closely with families, previous settings and school staff to develop a detailed understanding of each child's needs, interests and strengths, helping us create the best possible start.
Each year, starting from the week before the Easter holidays (providing your child has a confirmed place), we offer a programme of ten transition opportunities for children who will be joining Fountains Primary School. These carefully planned experiences are designed to build familiarity, confidence and positive relationships ahead of September. The opportunities include visits with parents and carers, visits with staff from your child's current school or nursery and sessions where children spend time in school independently, whilst being supported by our experienced staff team. This gradual approach allows us to get to know each child well and ensures that children and families feel supported throughout the transition process.
To support this process further, we have developed a range of personalised transition books. These books help children become familiar with new environments, routines, staff members and expectations before the transition takes place. By providing this simple information and visual support, the books help reduce anxiety and build confidence, allowing children to feel more prepared and secure.
We also use transition books when pupils move between curriculum pathways within school. These resources help children understand what will be changing and what will stay the same, supporting them to approach new experiences positively and successfully.
