Rays Newsletter - Summer Term 2

Welcome back! We hope you had a fantastic half-term and are looking forward to the second part of the summer term!

The pupils have completed some amazing pieces of work over the last half-term which they should really be proud of. They developed their skills in additions, subtraction, multiplication and division through using objects, jottings and mental maths. We also looked at sea creatures which facilitated some amazing scientific observations and some incredible pieces of writing in English.

This half-term our project is called Land Ahoy! Yo ho, yo ho, it’s a sailor’s life for me. Get your sea legs on, it’s time to sail the salty seas. Navigate, investigate and explore the world, just like Captain Cook. Make a boat, sink a ship, fly a pirate flag. Speak like a pirate, write like a poet, then weigh and measure a pirate’s booty. How do rescues happen at sea? Find out about brave volunteers and young Miss Darling, rowing her boat across stormy seas. Sing a sea shanty whilst cleaning the poop deck, then search the school grounds for Captain Longbeard’s hidden treasure. There’s land ahead. Let’s get this ship to port.

In maths, we will be finding halves and quarters of shapes and amounts. We will then study position and direction through exploring quarter, half, 3-quarter and whole turns. The children will also use language to describe position. Such as left, right, forwards and backwards. We will then consolidate number and place value by portioning, comparing and ordering numbers.

Last half-term, we also had careers day. The children enjoyed experiencing different jobs such as dog grooming, flower arranging and hair & beauty. We also had fun celebrating the Queen’s jubilee.

In Mighty Writer, the children have been very creative and used this to create some interesting stories which they will continue this half-term. We will be continuing to work through Read Write Inc. to continue to develop our reading and writing skills.

Thank you for all of your support.

The Rays team!
