Jellyfish Newsletter - Spring Term 1

Happy New Year! This term our topic is “What is a Shadow?” For this topic, we will be looking at light and dark shadows created by different materials and identifying shapes and objects from their shadows. We have already made lots of use of the sensory room and have been surprised at our shadows and what we can make them do.

We are using the topic title for creative links and we will be making a stained glass window, shadow painting with black and white paints and have got a messy balloon colour pop activity planned. Our weekly cookery lesson will be linked to healthy eating and we are looking at different fruits, tasting them and creating fruit salads. Pizzas are also on the menu where we will be choosing our ingredients from taste tests and then our favourite part eating them.

Numeracy/Maths will be all about shapes and size and we will cover 'numbers' within circle time and embedding throughout all other activities. Our books this term are ‘The Gruffalo's Child’ and the ‘Foggy, Foggy Forest.

Last term we all enjoyed visiting a space station for our story session wearing our helmets. The 'Zoom Moon' song was extremely popular and is still been requested when we listen to number songs.

We made and painted Diya pots and watched firework displays, the sounds they made were very loud and some identified or reacted to loud and quiet sounds. We explored shiny fabric and material and observed the effect that lights had on it.

Then just like that, it was December and all things Christmas. Jellyfish class went to the Holiday Inn for a Christmas party which we all enjoyed, we met Santa and were given a present. We watched a Magical Mayhem show and enjoyed a disco with our peers in Penguin Class. Then it was the Christmas concert and practising our scene and we all took part. It was a very busy term.
